Chris Fernandez is Our Collective Edge’s chef lead. A Bay Area culinary leader with more than twenty five years building food programmes, developing teams and creating dining rooms people remember. He works from a simple conviction: food brings people together, strengthens communities, and makes connection possible in a way very little else does.
He began as a chef, and earned a reputation for an ingredient-driven, purist approach to cooking. He was executive chef at several of the Bay Area’s most respected restaurants, among them Oliveto, Stars Bar & Dining and Poggio Trattoria, where he built a deep appreciation for hospitality, craftsmanship and the culture that gathers around a shared meal.
Among those rooms, one is the reason a good part of the Bay Area already knows his cooking: he was executive chef and designer at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, the restaurant and music venue Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh built beside the band’s own studio. Lesh sought him out for it. Chris built the kitchen, designed the team and wrote the menus.
From there he moved into executive leadership: culinary director and then director of operations for the Moana Restaurant Group, and later director of culinary and operations for Merchants Exchange Productions. In those roles he led multidisciplinary teams of chefs, managers and hospitality professionals, and ran restaurant operations, large-scale catering, weddings, corporate events and nonprofit fundraising.
What he is building now is larger than a kitchen. A collective of chefs, hospitality professionals, farmers, food producers, volunteers and community partners, creating genuinely good culinary experiences while widening access to nutritious, carefully prepared meals for people who need them. Catering, hospitality, education and community feeding in one model, where commercial success is what pays for the social impact rather than competing with it.
His view of where hospitality is going: exceptional food, real collaboration and community service belonging together, so there are occasions not only to celebrate around the table, but to make sure everyone has a place at it.
Within Our Collective Edge, Chris is the way in for any operator whose food system is quietly costing them their margin. He knows the farmers, the ordering, the inventory and the events.
